| General Functions |

This is independent scientific and supervisory work in the performance of complex physical and chemical analysis or a variety of sample types. Responsible for ensuring that laboratory testing is performed according to the Division’s quality assurance plan. Applies principals of chemical analysis to a variety of sample matrices in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Work is performed with limited supervision. |

| Representative Duties /Assignments |
| |
- Performs a full range of duties characteristic of a modern chemical laboratory, including supervision of staff.
- Reviews data obtained from testing to ensure accuracy, precision, and consistency.
- Maintains Division's comprehensive quality assurance plan through written updates.
- Conducts advanced testing as needed.
- Stays abreast of current trends, laws, and laboratory functions, etc., that relate to chemical analysis and environmental protection.
- Participates in federal and state audit programs to maintain laboratory certification.
- Recommends new tests or techniques and demonstrates the validity of the results based on established QA principles.
- Performs qualitative and quantitative chemical and physical studies and analysis of water, wastewater, soil or sludge samples.
- Maintains and verifies accuracy of laboratory records and results.
- Maintains laboratory analytical equipment.
- Provides information, advice, and support to lower level chemists as needed. Solves problems in the laboratory as well as in the field.
- Trains laboratory employees and ensures that the laboratory is in good operational order. May perform other supervisory duties such as planning work of others, maintaining standards, acting on employee problems, and selecting new employees.
- Based on area of assignment, may input quality data information by manual as well as direct data link to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for reporting.

| Minimum Qualifications |
| |
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Studies or closely related field and three years of laboratory experience in chemical analysis; or an equivalent combination of relevant education or experience. |
