| General Functions |
| |
Participates in professional chemical and biochemical analysis work within an assigned area of the laboratory or quality assurance and quality control review within all areas of the laboratory.
The position is responsible for performing complex physical and chemical or biochemical tests and analyses according to established principles and techniques and/or ensures work is being performed according to quality assurance and quality control standards. Work may involve assisting a higher level chemist in troubleshooting difficult tests or assisting in the development of analytical procedures.
Work is performed under the general direction of the Staff Scientist for the assigned area of the laboratory or the Senior Staff Scientist (Quality Assurance/Quality Control Officer). Performance is evaluated through observation, data and/or report review, and annual benchmark achievements. |

| Representative Duties /Assignments |
| |
Duties may vary based on assignment
- Performs sample analysis and documents analytical findings.
- Operates and performs routine preventative maintenance of Auto Analyzer, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Carbon Analyzer or other specialized analytical equipment.
- Performs non-routine analyses of a specialized nature.
- Assists in report writing, data handling and other office tasks as directed.
- Assists in the development of applied research methods.
- Maintains and orders laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Performs internal audits of all areas of the laboratory to ensure compliance with SOPs and quality control standards.
- Supervises and trains staff on analytical methods, general laboratory procedures, and quality control procedures.
- Performs other related work as assigned.

| Minimum Qualifications |
| |
Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology or a closely related science field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience may be substituted for formal education, provided the experience is related to chemist or quality assurance/quality control work in laboratory. |

Experience in chemical and biochemical analysis work in a certified environmental laboratory. |
