Supervises and performs administrative, operational, technical firefighting and EMS activities. The unit of assignment may be that of Field Operations, Public Information, Training, Administration, Communications Center, or other work unit.
Work is performed under the general direction of a Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief or Division Manager.

| Representative Duties /Assignments |

- Plans, directs and coordinates the work of personnel assigned to the unit.
- Supervises and evaluates personnel in emergency, non-emergency, and training settings.
- Plans and coordinates day-to-day training, which may include multi-company training activities.
- Involved in project management as required for special details
- Responds to emergencies, supervises and performs firefighting and EMS activities.
- Responds to requests/complaints from citizens, members of other departments, and co-workers.
- Manages and oversees the maintenance needs of each station.
- Participates in focus groups involving a variety of issues.
- Responsible for administrative functions, including station pre-plans, building inspections, street books, station maintenance, hose records, hydrant records, apparatus needs other than work orders for general maintenance, monthly station inspections and follow-up as needed, etc… (some of these apply to station captains only)
- Assesses and evaluates assigned personnel for all shifts concerning administrative issues.
- Develops programs to enhance career development.
- Prepares or assists in preparing annual budget.
- Develops and writes specifications for the purchasing of equipment.
- Investigates on the job accidents and injuries.
- Reviews workers compensation claims.
- Acts in the position of Battalion Chief as assigned.
- Participates in physical fitness activities to maintain physical conditioning.
- Ensures the completion of station area activities.
- Captain’s responsibilities are not limited to the above-described responsibilities, but they shall accept additional responsibilities as prescribed by the Battalion Chief.

| Minimum Qualifications |
| |
Two (2) years as combat certified Lieutenant in a fifty-six (56) hour capacity. Thirty(30) hours of undergraduate college credit from an accredited college or university. Must possess and maintain Florida Firefighter Certification. Must possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certification. Must possess a valid Class "D" or "E" Driver License (applicable to law or any changes thereof). Must have the Florida Fire Officer I Certification, or meet the requirements for Florida Fire Officer I at the time the training was received:
Clarification: Candidates receiving training before July 1, 1983 must have certificates for Fire Company Supervision, Parts I, II, III, and IV; Candidates receiving training between July 1, 1983 and May 1, 1985, must have received certificate for Fire Officer I with the following curriculum:
- 40 hours each- Company Officer Leadership, Fire Fighting Tactics I, Fire Service Instructor or equivalent
- 80 hours- Fire Prevention Inspection or 40 hours each- Private Fire prevention Inspection
- 80 hours- Hazardous Materials or 40 hours Hazardous Materials I and 40 hours Hazardous Materials II, or 40 hours Hazardous Materials I and Chemistry
All Candidates receiving training after May 1, 1985 must provide proof of passing State of Florida Fire Officer I test.
Mandatory Special Requirements

Paramedic Certification
NFA Incident Safety Officer qualification
HAZMAT Tech Level I qualified
Fire Instructor I Certification
