| General Functions |

Performs advanced engineering work and supervision over numerous major engineering activities and projects in the field of fire protection. This position is responsible for the review of building and fire protection design documents and inspects structures to ensure conformance with fire protection codes and standards and assists in writing and updating state and local fire protection codes and standards.

| Representative Duties /Assignments |
| |
- Performs advanced engineering work and plan review duties in the field of fire protection, building fire resistance evaluation, and code compliance review for performance-based building designs.
- Provides extensive supervision over numerous major engineering activities for new construction projects and plan review activities to ensure code compliance with Florida State Law.
- Supervises subordinates in one or more phases of fire protection inspections, plans review, and design analysis and provides detailed summaries to the Chief Fire Marshal of OFM.
- Assists and recommends in the development of fire and building code revisions in accordance with Florida Law.
- Inspects buildings, construction, fire alarm systems, piping sprinkler and standpipe systems, and water distribution systems to ensure that the equipment and systems are functioning properly and that they are designed in accordance with Florida Law.
- Meets with development and construction industry design professionals to evaluate and recommend design criteria for improved building safety and compliance to Florida Law.
- Determines whether water availability and water delivery systems are adequate to protect structures and fire department personnel.
- Supervises the continuous effort to improve operations, decrease plan review turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

| Minimum Qualifications |

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related field. Four (4) years of experience in fire protection or a related field of engineering or, general construction related experience with fire prevention. Additional experience in the fields of automatic fire sprinklers, fire alarms, hood suppression systems, architecture, design document interpretation, and design evaluation in Performance-Based Codes. Inspection and plan review experience in building plans, fire protection plans and projects to ensure compliance with fire protection codes and standards.
Licensed by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers as a Fire Protection Engineer or Professional Engineer or, licensed as a Professional Engineer in another state within the USA. Engineers hired with a Professional Engineer license from states outside of Florida must obtain a Professional Engineer license by the Florida Board of Engineering Examiners as a Fire Protection Engineer or Professional Engineer within one (1) year of the date of hire.
Must possess a valid state of Florida Fire Safety Inspector I certificate in compliance with Florida Statue 633 within one (1) year of the date of hire.
Must possess a valid state of Florida Driver’s license by the date of hire.
Must have the ability to climb ladders, work in trenches and function in heavy construction environments.
Must be proficient in a number of computer programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Fire Engineering Smoke Control and Timed Exiting Analysis.
