NETWORK PLANNING ANALYST

FLSA Status: Exempt 

General Functions
   Perform planning and design for government networks. Establish standards and methods for government network and data communications. Define the strategic direction for electronic communications. Provide consulting services to all county departments, divisions, elected offices, and state agencies requiring communications.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Plan, coordinate and implement changes to communications infrastructure within the government.
  • Provide network performance management and capacity planning.
  • Acquire hardware and software to support requirements.
  • Perform project management for networks planned and under construction.
  • Research new technologies, determine each technologies applicability to government requirements.
  • Design and produce technical training programs about network technologies used by the county.
  • Provide network consulting services and technical direction to departments, divisions, elected officials, state, local and municipal government.
  • Define functional and technical specifications.
  • Test, evaluate, and recommend new network technologies and products.
  • Interface with network vendors on issues regarding products and services.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or Physics. Ten years in the installation and programming of LAN, MAN, WAN Networks of all types in all known topologies and configurations problem analysis and repair of LAN, MAN, WAN Networks of all types. Software configuration of HUBS, Routers, Switches and Gateways for Ethernet, FDDI, Token Ring, SNA, ATM, TDP/IP, RFC implementation and support of I.P., U.D.P., T.C.P. and all major sub-categories of RFC's pertaining to TCP/IP. Multi-Prodocol Network Design, planning and support for multi-vendor networks in LAN, MAN, and WAN architectures. An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities, is acceptable.

Software and Equipment Skills Required

Cisco LS1010 and 8540 MSR ATM Switches, Cisco Catalyst 1900 through 5500 Switches, Cisco 5xxx Access Servers, Cisco 75xx through 100x Routers, including RSM and NetFlow Switching. Cisco Pix Firewalls. Cisco CWSI Network Management System Software. Digital Link DSU/CSU, Multiplexers, Digital Equipment Corp. FDDI Gigaswitch, HUD 900 Modules. Network General Sniffer Analyzer, Netscout RMON Probe for LAN/WAN. I.P. Terminal Servers, IBM 3174 Controller, 3172 Gateway, 3745 F.E.P.
 
Preferences
   Unix Systems Administration, C++ and Shell programming, SNMP and RMON programming and management.
